Life in Nagoya

ABC Plus will assist new teachers with things such as registering at the local ward office; opening a bank account; connecting gas, water, and electricity; and obtaining a cell phone number. Current teachers will be happy to assist by explaining the trash disposal system, the subway system, and the surrounding area.

Housing

All teachers live in apartments which are arranged by ABC Plus, unless otherwise discussed. They are generally a 5 - 18-minute walk from the school. Apartments are typically between 22 and 28 square meters and have a bathroom, kitchen, and one bedroom. ABC Plus will be the guarantor for the apartment, and will take care of paying the key money, any deposits, insurance, and real estate agent fees.

All the apartments are semi-furnished with a new futon (bedding), a refrigerator, a washing machine, an air conditioner, and light fittings. When Internet access is not already installed in the apartment, we can help you find a suitable plan.

The cost of rent and utilities will be deducted from the teachers’ paycheck each month. These expenses range between:

Rent: 42,000 yen to 62,000 yen, depending on the size and location of the apartment.

Electricity: about 3,000-8,000 yen

Gas: about 2,000-5,000 yen

Water: about 2,500 yen

Internet: typically between
4,000-6,000 yen.

Sightseeing

Nagoya is conveniently located in the center of Japan. With easy access to an international airport, the shinkansen and JR trains, as well as buses, there are endless options for day trips and weekend getaways. From Nagoya station, a shinkansen ride can get you to Tokyo in about an hour and a half, and Kyoto is only about thirty minutes in the opposite direction. There are also beautiful locations to explore in the neighboring prefectures of Gifu,
Mie, Nagano, and Shizuoka.
